Blood Sugar Response: Know Only The Essentials

Bloog Sugar Response

Blood Sugar? :)

  • Blood sugar is the concentration of glucose in your blood.
  • Foods that increase your blood sugar quickly (hence having a high blood-sugar response) have high Glycemic Index (GI).
  • Foods that increase your blood sugar gradually have a relatively low GI.
  • High GI as compared to low GI foods, increase metabolism. But foods with a high GI also causes your body to store up fat!
  • Low-GI foods keep a relatively steady metabolism, but indirectly increase your metabolism by helping your body burn fat!
  • For your normal-day diet, try to eat low-GI foods only. When you have had some strenuous physical activity (like playing soccer or sweating it out on your home gym), then a post-workout diet consisting of high-GI foods seems to be the way to go.
  • This is the essentials of Blood Sugar and how it relates to your metabolism. There is tons – and I mean tons – of more information. Right now, I am interested in eating healthy food and not sitting for the nutritionist exam.

Hope this helped.

Glycemic Index (GI)

A low-GI food will release glucose more slowly and steadily. A high-GI food causes a more rapid rise in blood glucose levels and is suitable for energy recovery after exercise, for example.

Know that GI is not a ‘once-and-for-all’ type of measurement and one should not rely solely on the GI. In fact, the GI of food should be used as a basic guide – a reminder even – of which types of food to consume and when.

Some GI numbers and LowGI and High-GI foods are presented below:

Classification GI range Examples
Low GI 55 or less most fruits and vegetables, legumes/pulses, whole grains, nuts, fructose and products low in carbohydrates
Medium GI 56–69 whole wheat products, basmati rice, sweet potato, sucrose
High GI 70 and above baked potatoes, watermelon, white bread, most white rices, corn flakes, extruded breakfast cereals, glucose

One thing: As I go through the Truth About Abs book that I recently bought, I realize that it is about eating foods that are as ‘unprocessed’ as possible, and not about counting calories. You may call them ‘natural’, you may call them ‘organic’ or whatever the marketers have decided to call it in your part of the world, but try to keep your foods unprocessed and you should be alright, God willing.
